CRUISING IN GREECE

In Greece you need to have either full British, S.S.R or another European Registry, if purchasing a boat for sale hitherto registered in another country. Williams & Smithells Yacht Brokers can obtain British Registry for you or its transfer to you if already registered. There are a few marinas away from the mainland area around Piraeus with more now being built in the Ionian. Two first class cruising marinas in the Ionian are Gouvia in Corfu, and Lefkas on the mainland. There are also safe ports where boats for sale in Greece may be left for long periods, mooring afloat or ashore and there are boatyards with modern facilities such as travel hoists, chandleries and maintenance workshops.

From the beginning of 2004 the Greek authorities introduced a Transit Log Book for foreign visiting boats, obtainable from the local Port Police at a cost of €30.

BOAT INSURANCE

Most insurance companies include cover as far as Longitude 35E., which includes all of Greece, the Ionian, Lefkas, Cyprus and most of Turkey. Insurance rates increase the further east you go, ranging from about 1.25% of value in the western Mediterranean, to 1.6% in the east, for 12 months in-commission cover. Check carefully however, as some companies exclude the Adriatic, Ionian and Aegean from 'Mediterranean' cover. Greek law requires that boat insurance gives a minimum cover of £200,000 against third party claims. For a boat 10 years or more old, a survey will be mandatory for insurance. This is wise, in any case. Another point to watch is that some insurance companies stipulate that if boats for sale in Greece are left unattended for more than a stated time (and this can be quite short) guardiennage must be arranged.
