Insurance
Most insurance companies include cover as far as Longitude 35E.,
which includes all of Greece, the Ionain, Lefkas, Cyprus and
most of Turkey. Insurance rates increase the further east you
go, ranging from about 1.25% of value in the western
Mediterranean, to 1.6% in the east, for 12 months in-commission
cover. Check carefully however, as some companies exclude the
Adriatic, Ionian and Aegean from ‘Mediterranean’ cover. Greek
law requires that boats be insured with a minimum cover of
£200,000 against third party claims. For a boat 10 years or more
old, a survey will be mandatory for insurance. This is wise, in
any case. Another point to watch is that some insurance
companies stipulate that if a yacht for sale in Greece is left
unattended for more than a stated time (and this can be quite
short) guardiennage must be arranged.
