It was Homer's 'beautiful and rich land', and Odysseus' last stop on his journey home to Ithaka. Shakespeare reputedly used it as a background for The Tempest. In the 20th century the Durrell brothers, among others, have extolled its virtues.
Corfu also has Greece's only cricket ground - the game was imported to Corfu by the British during their 49 year hegemony of the island from 1815 to 1864. It has remained firmly entrenched in Corfu ever since.
